  1. An is used before a word beginning with a vowel. Vowels are a, e, i, o and u. To compare: Sometimes, a lion gets angry.(without vowel - lion begins with "l")

An anteater eats ants.(with vowel - anteater begins with "a")

  1. Sometimes it can also be used in front of the letter "h".
  2. When talking about letters individually, remember that when their sounds begin with vowels, you must you "an". "You use an "l" in "lettuce"" ("ell" - begins with "e").

Why are "a" and "an" so important?[]

"A" and "an" are nearly always being used. This makes them very useful, and without them speaking would be very difficult. Try it! Why not attempt a whole day without saying "a" or "an". It's harder than you might think!
